Microloans in 2026: check the full cost of a small loan

A small loan can create a large payday commitment. Compare the cash you receive with everything you must repay, then test the due date against essential spending.

Start with the amount that reaches you

People use the word microloan for different small-value borrowing products. The label alone does not establish a legal category, a fee limit or the repayment period. Read the specific agreement. If the expense is R1 500, identify how much must actually reach your account to cover it. A displayed principal amount and the cash deposited may differ where the quotation includes financed or deducted charges. Ask the provider to explain any difference rather than increasing the application amount by guesswork.

Count each compulsory charge once

Use the written quotation to make three columns: money received, scheduled repayments and amounts paid separately. Identify interest, initiation charges, service charges and any required insurance in the relevant columns. The NCR’s small-credit quotation form shows these cost fields and the repayment arrangements. A charge already included in an instalment belongs in your explanation, but adding it again to the total would exaggerate the price. Optional extras need a separate decision; do not assume every item offered with the application is required.

An example you can reproduce

Suppose a fictional borrower receives R1 500 and makes one payment of R1 780, with no other required charge. The difference is R280. Dividing R280 by R1 500 gives about 18.7% of the cash received over that repayment period. It is a simple cost comparison, not the contractual interest rate or an annual percentage rate. A second fictional option requires R1 720 plus a separate compulsory R90 payment. Its complete outflow is R1 810, which is R30 more than the first option despite its lower main repayment. These invented amounts illustrate the calculation and do not represent available offers.

Test what remains after repayment

Put the due date next to the next reliable income date. Deduct rent, food, transport, utilities and repayments already committed before deciding that the remaining amount can cover the loan. A small amount is still unsuitable if repayment leaves an essential bill unpaid. If the plan needs another loan immediately afterwards, the funding gap has moved rather than disappeared. Before borrowing, consider a smaller purchase, time to save or a payment arrangement directly with the organisation owed money. Compare the terms of any alternative instead of assuming it is free.

Read what happens if the date slips

Ask how a late payment changes the amount owed, which contact route to use and how any agreed change will be documented. Save the agreement and the repayment schedule. An extension may add cost or leave another payment due; it should not be treated as a new borrowing allowance. If payment difficulties develop, contact the provider through an independently verified route before the missed date where possible. Keep the response and reference so the next conversation starts from the same facts.

Questions and answers

Is a small loan automatically easier to afford?

No. Affordability depends on income, existing commitments and the repayment date. The size of the application does not show how much money will remain afterwards.

Is total cost divided by cash received an annual rate?

No. That calculation only describes the stated period and cashflows. An annual measure requires the payment timing and the appropriate calculation convention.
