Credit-card guides
Read the statement, understand payment conditions and compare the actual cost of a purchase. These guides explain balances, interest-free conditions, minimum payments and usable rewards without inventing a best-card ranking.

Start with your decision
Keep the statement balance, minimum due and spending limit distinct. Define a repayment plan for the purchase and include charges before comparing it with a personal-loan quotation.

Read a credit-card statement: balance, minimum and due date
Find the statement closing balance, minimum payment and due date before looking at the available limit. These figures answer different questions: what the statement records, what payment the issuer requires and when it is due. Compare payments and purchases with your own records before deciding how much to repay.
Credit-card interest-free periods: check the purchase and payment dates
An advertised interest-free period is conditional, not a promise that every transaction receives the maximum number of days. Read which purchases qualify and the balance that must be paid by the due date. A purchase late in a statement cycle has a different interval to the deadline from one made near the start.
Minimum credit-card payments: see the balance left behind
A minimum payment is not a payoff plan by itself. To see the balance left, add posted interest, fees and new spending, then subtract the payment. Even a payment made on time can leave substantial debt. Use the actual statement figures and stop adding hypothetical future purchases to an otherwise fixed repayment estimate.
Credit-card rewards: calculate what you actually keep
Count rewards you can actually redeem from spending you would make anyway. Subtract account costs, relevant interest and extra spending undertaken to qualify. An advertised maximum reward percentage is not the return on every rand you spend. Start with your own transactions and programme rules, then calculate a net amount.
Personal loan or credit card for a purchase: compare two repayment plans
Compare a personal-loan quote with a credit-card repayment plan for the same purchase and date. Add all required payments and charges, and state whether the card balance will be cleared or carried. A fixed loan instalment and a revolving card minimum are not directly comparable monthly prices.
Bring the original documents
Use your statement and the official product terms. Keep the date of each document. The examples in this section are labelled fictional, and named bank rules apply only to the cited product. No bank ranking, approval outcome or future rate is implied.

Questions about this section
No. This is an educational section about card use and repayment. Official issuer links support explanations. The separate SaveWise loan table should not be interpreted as a credit-card application list.
Begin with the statement guide to identify balances and dates. Then read the interest-free and minimum-payment guides. Rewards are worth calculating only after the payment conditions and account costs are clear.
One concerns the payment required under the agreement; the other concerns conditions for particular interest treatment. Confusing them can make a minimum payment look like full settlement. Read each condition in the issuer’s documents.
Yes, the purchase-comparison guide builds two schedules for the same expense. Use actual quotes and card terms. It does not say that every listed provider offers a product for that expense or accepts every applicant.
It uses benefits actually redeemable from eligible spending, then subtracts relevant costs and extra spending. The guide supplies a fictional calculation without inventing current programme rates or assigning a winning bank.
No. Card balances can have different transaction categories and allocation rules. The loan calculator’s fixed-payment assumptions are stated on the page. Use your issuer’s records for the actual card reconciliation.
Check cash separately in the agreement. The named issuer example distinguishes cash from qualifying purchases. Do not generalise a purchase interest-free period to withdrawals or transfers without checking the product’s rules.
The issuer handles your account. Use independently located official support and keep a reference. SaveWise can explain terms and calculations, but has no authority to alter a balance, approve credit or resolve an account dispute.
A separate route for loan comparison
If you are comparing a loan with a card-funded purchase, first build both repayment plans. The table below lists loan provider destinations, not card offers or a bank ranking.
