Read a credit-card statement: balance, minimum and due date

Find the statement closing balance, minimum payment and due date before looking at the available limit. These figures answer different questions: what the statement records, what payment the issuer requires and when it is due. Compare payments and purchases with your own records before deciding how much to repay.

Reconcile the statement period

Record the opening balance and add posted purchases, charges and interest; subtract credited payments and refunds. Use transaction dates and posting dates carefully. A pending authorisation may be visible in the app before it becomes a posted transaction; Standard Bank explains that distinction in its FAQ [1].

Choose a payment using the correct balance

The app’s current balance can change after the statement date. Read the issuer’s instructions for paying the statement amount and qualifying for any purchase interest-free treatment. Do not assume the minimum payment clears the account. If the payment cannot be made, contact the issuer about the existing agreement before taking on another debt.

Investigate discrepancies precisely

For an unfamiliar item, record its description, amount and date and contact the issuer through independently found official channels. Distinguish a pending hold, a fee and a posted purchase. Keep the reference and follow-up date. Do not publish an unredacted statement or card number to ask a public forum for help.

A calculation you can check

Fictional statement: opening R2 000 + purchases R600 + fees R50 + interest R30 − payment R500 − refund R100 = closing R2 080. A separate minimum-payment line does not change that reconciliation. Replace the inputs with posted entries on your own statement.

Questions about this decision

Is the current app balance the statement balance?

It may differ because transactions posted after the statement date. Identify which amount your issuer requires by the due date and keep that statement. Do not swap balance labels in a repayment calculation.

What is a pending authorisation?

It is a transaction hold rather than a completed statement entry. Check how the issuer displays pending and posted items. Avoid counting both the hold and the later posted purchase as two separate expenses.

Does available credit show affordable spending?

No budget calculation is provided by that figure alone. Compare a purchase with income dates, existing commitments and the repayment it would create. A spending limit is different from money you have set aside to repay.

Why is there more than one interest line?

Ask which transaction category each line covers. The cited FAQ distinguishes purchase and cash finance charges. Reconcile each charge with its applicable balance and dates instead of treating the whole statement as one uniform purchase balance.

Can a refund replace my scheduled payment?

Ask the issuer how a refund affects the required payment for that statement. A refund and a payment are different entries. Do not cancel a planned repayment solely because a merchant says a refund is coming.

What if I recognise the shop but not the amount?

Compare the receipt, currency and posted amount, then ask about any applicable conversion or separate charge. Keep the original receipt and the issuer’s response. A familiar merchant name does not resolve an unexplained amount.

Which date should I put in my budget?

Use the payment due date for repayment planning and the transaction date for tracking the purchase. Keep both where needed. Allow for the issuer’s payment processing instructions rather than assuming a transfer made at the last moment is already credited.

Can SaveWise investigate my account?

No. We do not have account access. Contact the card issuer for missing transactions, disputes and payment allocation. The worked reconciliation helps organise your question without sending us card details or statements.
