Choose a student or youth bank account
Compare the account you qualify for today and the tariff that applies after the youth period ends. A student label is not enough: count the payments, cash access and optional costs you will actually use during term and holidays.

Separate student status from age
Make two columns: age eligibility and proof-of-study requirements. Ask what changes after graduation or the age cut-off. Standard Bank’s current account catalogue marks Student Achiever discontinued [1], illustrating why an old comparison article is not evidence that a named product remains open to new applicants.
Price a student’s actual month
Include transport-related cash, rent transfers, debit orders and the cost of keeping the account active during holidays. Compare a bundled package with a transaction-priced account using the same activity. Leave discounts out until you identify a purchase you would make anyway and a benefit you can actually redeem.

Choose useful support rather than a label
Check how to reset access when your phone is lost, obtain proof of account for accommodation and manage payment limits. Avoid choosing credit or an overdraft simply because it appears beside the account. Prepare a calendar reminder to review the tariff before the student or youth terms change.
Compare a study year, not an opening gift
Build a study-year basket that includes the payments you expect during term and holidays. Record proof-of-study requirements and any change that occurs at a particular age or when studying ends. Put the later account price beside the current student price if the provider supplies it. Keep once-off rewards separate from recurring charges and avoid multiplying a welcome benefit into every year. If documents are missing, ask whether the advertised product is actually available to your applicant type. A former product name in an old article should not be treated as an application route that still works.
A calculation you can check
Fictional annual cost: R15 monthly during eight months plus R40 monthly for four months after a tariff change = R280. Assuming R15 for all twelve months would understate the year by R100.

Questions about this decision
Must I be enrolled?
Read the product’s own eligibility. Some youth offers use age criteria; a student-specific offer may request study evidence.
What happens after graduation?
Ask which account or tariff replaces the current terms and when the change occurs. Record the answer with a review date.
Are holiday months included?
Calculate a full year of account charges. Lower holiday usage does not establish that the monthly account fee disappears.
Do rewards justify a higher fee?
Count only benefits you can use on planned purchases, then deduct the additional account cost.
Should I add an overdraft?
Decide separately using repayment capacity and the actual terms. Account suitability does not establish credit suitability.
How do I compare cash access?
Price the amount, withdrawal frequency and channel you will use near campus or home.
Can I rely on an old student ranking?
Confirm every shortlisted product in the bank’s current catalogue before comparing the dated fee guides.
What should I review first?
Check eligibility and the post-youth tariff, then compare transaction costs. This avoids pricing an account you cannot open.
